Do You Understand Why Obama Snubbed The British?
During World War II, FDR’s objective and message was simple: the purpose of the United States as a country, and of our involvement in the war, was the end of colonialism and imperialism. As most of the world was still living under the yoke of imperialism, this was incredibly powerful. It was expressed most directly at the Yalta Conference, when FDR said to Churchill: “you know, you’re going to have to give up India, and the rest of the British Empire,” to which Churchill replied “yes, I know, we’ll give it up eventually.” FDR snapped back “No! No, you’re going to give it up right away! And France is going to give up Indochina, and the Dutch are going to give up Java. I don’t care what this does to the European powers, I’m ending colonialism! We’re going to free these people, and we’re going to help them develop!”
But alas, it was not to be. Roosevelt died in 1945, and Truman was taken by Churchill’s counter-vision - that of a renewed British Empire, with America providing the muscle and the British financial and intelligence elite providing the brains and calling the shots. So, Truman essentially betrayed the US - he waged a relentless campaign to turn our Soviet allies into the enemy, imported fascism (ala McCarthy), shut down much of our vast productive apparatus built up during the war (which was to be used to help former colonies develop), turned the remaining elements into the modern-day military-industrial complex, and allowed the imperial powers (especially the British) to recolonize much of their lost territory. This state of affairs came to be known as the “Special Relationship” between the US and UK, and is the geopolitical dynamic which persists to the present day. Well, until now anyways.
President Obama seems to understand that the British Empire, like all empires inevitably, is now in its death throes, and that the only way for the US to provide for future prosperity and security is to make a clean break. His snub of Gordon Brown, and his ending of the “Special Relationship,” was deliberate, and was meant to send a clear signal to the other 3 great nations of the world - India, Russia, and China. The signal sent was thus: “We want to join with you in the cause of development and peaceful coexistence. We renounce imperialism, and will no longer be party to it.” This was further borne out in Sec. Clinton’s recent trips to those three countries, as well as the public clash between the US and UK as regards the G20 response to the financial mess. In effect, it was not only and extradition of America from the collapsing British Empire, but a declaration of war on it.
So, does that make sense now?
Applying For A British Passport For My Polish Wife. Very Complicated Scenario. ?
My Polish wife and I (British) met and married 4 years ago in Germany . We have since moved to China to live and work. On a recent trip to Thailand we suffered a 4.5 hour delay at the hands of the Thai immigration. Her Polish passport caused this delay. I could queue and enter Thailand with a simple “Visa on arrival” and this visa allowed me to stay for 30 days. My wife on the other hand had to enter into a different kind of ‘passport on arrival” which involved photos and lots of queuing. Eventually she arrived at the immigration officer and they said she could only stay for 12 days. Now obviously we should have looked into this before arriving but we presumed that now that Poland is in the EU and her entry would be as simple as mine with a UK passport.
This made me wonder if she can apply for a British passport although we do not live in the UK and have no real plans to ever go back and live there.
Can she have a UK passport? How long does this take? Must we live in the UK to do this? Can she keep her Polish passport as well?
I know this is a tricky question and I appreciate all of your help.

What Is The Name Of The Book/author About A British Woman Who Quits Her Job To Bike Thru Spain. Any Thoughts?
I bought the book in 2001 in London and I think it was published in 2000/2001. The book is about the author’s trip through Spain on a bicycle. She is a british woman who, at the time she decided to do this, was working in China I think. She took some time to find a bike, train a bit, and then went on her way. She flew to Spain and biked from city to city.
Do you know the name of the book and/or author?
Will Entering China With British Passport Affect My China ‘home Return Permit’ Renewal?
I am a holder of the ‘Home Return Permit’ (HRP) held by Hong Kong citizens (I am a HK ID card holder), as well as a British Passport holder.
Normally I would enter China using the ‘HRP’ however this has expired and I am going on a trip to China in the next few weeks.
I am currently living in the UK and not had a chance to return to Hong Kong to get it renewed, therefore I will need to enter China with my British Passport and visa for China.
My question is, when I return to Hong Kong will this affect my re-application for the HRP as their records will show that I have entered China as a British citizen and HRPs are not issued to non-PRC citizens.
Will this be a problem or am I worrying too much?
Hope that has been clear enough to understand!
