Tibet Route To Kyrgyzstan Via Xinjiang?
By admin. Filed in English |Tibet route to Kyrgyzstan via Xinjiang?
I am planning a Tibet trip in late June/early July, and afterwards, (depending on what kind of Chinese visa I get in Kathmandu, or Lhasa), I’d like to continue into China proper, and visit Xinjiang, and maybe even Qinghai.
My question is what kind of transport is there from Lhasa to Xinjiang? What’s the website for the Chinese train that goes from Lhasa north? Does it stop in Urumuqi, or do I have to backtrack through Xining?
Another question is what route do I take to enter Kyrgystan (from China)? I choose Kyrgyz because Canadians get visa on arrival. I am also interested in entering Kazakhstan from China, but then I need to pre-arrange a visa, but where in that part of Western China, I don’t know.
Tajikistan also borders Xinjiang, but I am not sure if foriegners are allowed to cross here?

I can’t tell you with absolute certanty, but since no one else is answering I’ll throw my 2 cents in.
I highly doubt there is direct train link between Lhasa and Urumqi. You would have to go via Qinghai around up to Sichuan and then into Xinjiang in a big U that would easily take 3 or 4 days on trains. There is to my knowledge only the one train line recently built that connects Tibet to the rest of China.
Also, land crossings are always tricky but can be done through Nepal, but I’d call the Chinese and Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Embassies to see if the borders are open. I’d be fairly certain that the China-Tajikistan border is closed due to the attacks during the Olympics and China’s hate for them. Kyrgyzstan could be open but you’d probably have to take a bus, not many train links through those areas.
Try looking at http://www.gochinasites.com to find embassy info for foreign embassies in China.
